Farm Bureau applauds House passage of animal cruelty bill
JACKSON – The Mississippi House of Representatives passed Senate
Bill 2821 yesterday that deals with cruelty to dogs and cats. This bill
is the compromise version of the bill that was worked out between the
Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation and the Humane Society of the United
States making aggravated cruelty to a domestic dog or cat a second offense
felony. It also sets in place guidelines that protect livestock farmers
from having unrealistic charges brought against them in the normal operation
of their farms.
"Farm Bureau applauds the House for the passage of SB 2821. We feel
this legislation has enough protections for agriculture and landowners
while providing penalties for aggravated cruelty to dogs and cats,”
said Randy Knight, President of the Mississippi Farm Bureau. “We
are glad to have worked with other organizations to accomplish a common
goal of protecting animals".
The bill must now go back to the Senate to be voted on since it was amended
from the original bill passed.
