Farm Bureau members bound for Washington DC
JACKSON – A group of about 80 volunteer leaders of Farm Bureau are
bound for Washington, D.C., to convey the message to their Congressional
leaders that agriculture is still an important part of the economy of
Mississippi and the nation.
The group, which represents more than 230,000 members of Farm Bureau
in the state, will spend three days in the nation’s capital (March
26-28) carrying agriculture’s message.
“This kind of personal contact with members of Congress is invaluable
to our efforts,” said David Waide, president of the Mississippi
Farm Bureau. “Face-to-face contact between folks who support families
on the farm and elected officials helps the lawmakers see the personal
side of laws they pass.”
While in Washington, the volunteer leaders intend to stress the importance
of Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) and push the issue of animal identification.
Bills addressing these issues are pending in Congress. They will also
be talking with their representatives about taxes and agricultural trade.
In addition to visits with members of Congress, the members of the delegation
will visit with USDA and Environmental Protection Agency officials along
with a visit to the Canadian Embassy.
This trip is part of Farm Bureau’s year-round effort to have an
influence on legislation that affects the well-being of agriculture and
rural Mississippi.
