Mississippi Farm Bureau to hold 85th annual meeting
Mississippi Farm Bureau delegates will gather in Jackson for their 85th
annual convention, Dec. 2-3, with a record membership and an agenda to
set policy for the state’s largest farm organization. Mississippi
Farm Bureau President David Waide , a West Point row crop and cattle producer,
announced a new membership high of 235,135 member families.
The adoption of the organization’s policy book, which lays out Farm Bureau’s direction for the coming year, is the most important business of the upcoming convention, Waide said.
“Getting ready for the writing of the new Farm Bill is extremely important,” Waide said. “Our volunteer leaders have always taken this responsibility very seriously.”
The 2006 annual meeting begins at 9 a.m. on December 2, with the Statewide Farm Bureau Talent Contest and the Miss Farm Bureau – Mississippi contest with young ladies competing for a $2000 college scholarship.
Following will be the Young Farmer & Rancher Discussion Meet, a round table discussion of a predetermined topic. The participants' responsibility is to exchange ideas and information in an effort to solve a problem. It gives the contestants valuable experience in communicating in a small group setting.
At 1 p.m., the County Recognition Program will be held. This program pays tribute to the county Farm Bureau leaders and their program of work during the past year.
The first General Session will be at 6:00 p.m. Saturday evening highlighted by a keynote address by Senator Thad Cochran. The Young Farmer and Rancher Achievement Award, the Excellence in Leadership Award, and the Distinguished Service Award will also be presented Saturday evening.
The convention continues on Sunday, December 3, with a Farm Bill and Alternative Energy session at 8 a.m. followed by a worship service featuring Miss America 1987 Kellye Cash.
The Business Session will be held on Sunday, December 3, at 1 p.m. The
annual report will be delivered by President David Waide to be followed
by the adoption of the resolutions that form the Policy Book and the election
of officers and directors.
